How to choose baby clothes as a gift when you’re unsure of the size

You’ve found a lovely little outfit. Now comes the less lovely part: choosing between the sizes.

If you’re buying baby clothes as a gift, start with what the family needs and when they plan to use the piece. A quick question will usually tell you more than guessing from the baby’s age. You can keep the print a surprise.

Ask about the size they are using now

Try a simple message: “I’d love to bring a little outfit. Which size are you using at the moment, and is there a size you need next?”

That gives the family room to tell you what would help. They might already have plenty of tiny outfits, or they might want something they can use straight away. Neither answer needs to spoil the gift.

If you ask about a favourite piece they already own, ask which brand it is too. Use that as context, then check the size guidance for the piece you’re choosing rather than assuming the same label guarantees the same fit.

Decide whether the gift is for now or later

A welcome-home gift, something for a visit next month, and an outfit chosen ahead of a family occasion are different shopping decisions.

For something to wear soon, ask the family what fits now. For something to put aside, ask which next size they would find useful. Avoid choosing a much larger size only because it feels like the easier answer: it may leave the family storing a piece without a clear occasion to use it.

You don’t need to predict a baby’s growth. You just need enough information to make a thoughtful choice.

Read the actual product’s size guidance

Open the size chart linked to the item you’re considering. Check what it asks you to use: height, weight, garment measurements, or a combination. Follow the brand’s instructions, and don’t treat the age band as your only answer.

If a chart gives measurements, check whether they describe the baby or the garment. A number is only useful when you know what is being measured. If the guide is unclear, ask the retailer before choosing.

For a gift, you can send the chart to the parent or caregiver with your message. That is often simpler than trying to collect measurements yourself.

Choose for the family’s everyday preferences

Once the size is settled, look at the details they will actually use. Do they have a preferred style of fastening? Are they choosing one-piece outfits or separates? Is there a colour or print they particularly like?

Let those answers guide the gift. One well-chosen piece can feel more personal than a bigger bundle selected without knowing what is needed.

Keep practical information with it too. Leave the care label attached and include the product details. If you want the family to have an exchange option, check the retailer’s current policy before buying; never assume a gift receipt or exchange is available.

If you still cannot check the size

Save the piece to a shortlist and ask when the timing is better. Or make the choice part of the gift: “I’ve found something I think you’ll love. Shall we pick the size together?”

The surprise can be in the design, the note, or the moment you give it. It doesn’t have to depend on guessing a number correctly.

Before choosing, your small checklist is:

  • Which size is useful now, or next?
  • When is the family likely to use the gift?
  • Have you checked this item’s size guidance?
  • Does the style suit the family’s preferences?
  • Have you checked any exchange terms you are relying on?
